Once said to be having a Harry Potter-ish feel, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief indeed has that. I'll bet it's the same feeling of disappointment for those who have read the book first. I haven't read the book yet but I've got quite high expectations for this movie based on the reviews and its trailers. I like the story but the movie especially it's actors/actresses, didn't give it justice.
First, the scenes were not that exciting as opposed to the Harry Potter movies (but still didn't live up to my expectations having read the books first). I regretted having paid Php180.00 for that Red Carpet experience at the Gaisano Mall of Davao (that's another blog).
Second, the actors/actresses were unconvincing. Logan Lerman who played the protagonist, Percy Jackson, was lame especially the way he reacted to the death of his mother. Hello? A little more emotion please. She gave up A LOT for him and at least he could've been more convincing being "in mourning". And the rest of the group Alexandra Daddario (as Annabeth, daughter of Athena), Jake Abel (as Luke, son of Hermes), Brandon T. Jackson (as Grover, protector of Percy), weren't as impressive either. The young actors/actresses are still, well, young. They need more experience, I think. Brandon T. Jackson, however, was quite funny. He delivered those punch lines well. I was also disappointed though on Pierce Brosnan (as Chiron) and Uma Thurman (as Medusa). The roles didn't suit them. Maybe because they have portrayed strong, iconic roles such as James Bond and The Bride on Kill Bill, that I had expected something of the same caliber. I expected too much once again.
Should you choose to watch and if it's still showing in your local cinemas, let this be a lesson. Don't expect too much. This movie deserves a 2 out of 5 (five being the highest). What a disappointed and a waste of money... *sigh*
tsk tsk
